Two habits are slowing you down. Neither is your brain.

Reading speed feels like a fixed trait — some people are "fast readers," most aren't. In practice it's mostly two learned habits and both respond to a fixed-point display and a bit of practice.

The inner voice (subvocalization)

When you read normally, a quiet inner voice "says" each word as your eyes pass over it. It feels automatic, even necessary — but it isn't. Comprehension doesn't require sounding a word out internally and once you stop, your reading pace is no longer tied to your speaking pace.

That's why most readers plateau around 200–300 words per minute — close to normal speech rate. It's not a ceiling your visual system imposes; it's a ceiling your inner narrator imposes.

What breaks the habit: presenting words fast enough and one at a time, that there's no time to sub-vocalize each one. The brain shifts to recognizing whole words visually instead.

Eye movement (saccades)

Normal reading isn't a smooth scan across a line — your eyes jump from point to point in quick hops called saccades, pausing briefly (a fixation) at each one to take in a few words. A meaningful share of total reading time is spent on those jumps and on small backward corrections (regressions), not on the fixations themselves.

Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) — showing one word at a time in the same screen position — removes the need for any of that. Your eyes stay still. The words move instead.

The Optimal Recognition Point

Even within RSVP, a naive implementation still makes your eyes hunt slightly — because words of different lengths, centered as blocks, put their midpoint in a different place each time. Eye-tracking research on word recognition (dating back to O'Regan's work on fixation location in the 1980s and later formalized as the "Optimal Viewing Position" by Brysbaert and Nazir) found that the fastest recognition happens when the eye lands slightly left of a word's true center — not at the middle.

That position is the Optimal Recognition Point (ORP). Fixate calculates it for every word based on length, colors that letter and holds it at the exact same pixel position on screen every time — the technique popularized by commercial readers like Spritz and studied directly in RSVP eye-tracking research. Words flow through that one fixed point instead of your eyes hunting for the center of each new word.

What speed is realistic

With subvocalization suppressed and saccades removed, most readers land comfortably in the 500–600 WPM range with practice, roughly double a typical unaided pace. Speeds well above that are achievable for simple or familiar material, but comprehension studies consistently show accuracy dropping off on dense or unfamiliar text as speed climbs into four digits — there's a real trade-off between speed and retention and it gets steeper the harder the material is.

Fixate defaults to 300 WPM and lets you raise it gradually rather than starting you at the top of the range. Treat the highest speeds as a drill for training your eyes and attention, not as your everyday reading pace for anything you need to remember in detail.

Is this "speed reading" or something more legitimate?

It's a specific, well-studied technique — RSVP with ORP alignment — not the broader "read a whole page at a glance" claims that don't hold up under study. What it does is measurable and real: remove subvocalization and eye-scanning overhead so your reading rate is limited mainly by word recognition speed, not by habit.

Will I actually retain what I read at high WPM?

Comprehension holds up well for most people through roughly 500–600 WPM on straightforward text. Past that, retention on dense or technical material drops for most readers — Fixate's per-word timing gives longer words and punctuation slightly more time to compensate, but there's no substitute for slowing down on material you need to retain precisely.

Does it work for textbooks or technical writing?

It works, but push the pace less aggressively. Dense material with unfamiliar terms benefits from a lower WPM and sentence pauses left on — both are adjustable in the reader.
